More and more of the businesses I work with are asking for my Sustainability Statement. I have always made it a priority to do my part for the environment, and over the years I have put several measures in place to reduce my impact. I have listed them below in my sustainability statement. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear from you. There’s always room for improvement!
Recycling
- It goes without saying that I recycle all paper and plastic in my studio.
- I don’t use plastic water bottles and I refill my metal bottle when out and about. I make packed lunches in reusable containers, avoiding single use packaging as much as possible (and I like eating healthy food).
Transport
- I use public transport – mainly trains- where possible.
- I ride an electric cargo bike, which I use daily for personal use and for work when riding to the train station, as all my materials and equipment fit in the box at the front. I would be lost without it.
Postage & Packaging
- Most of the plastic sleeves I use to protect my paintings are made from compostable EN 13432 certified film. Sadly, large sizes are not available (yet).
- Posting: I use eco-friendly brown packaging tape and brown corrugated envelopes with eco score 5/5 (climate neutral, recyclable, biodegradable, sustainable material and plastic free).
Materials
- I use conservation mount card made in the UK by Arcadia that comply to FATG conservation level or FATG Standard Level.
- The acid free water colour paper I use is from Seawhite of Brighton.
- I use gouache paint, which is made with non-toxic binders that are safe for the environment and it doesn’t contain solvents. My pastels and pencils are also non-toxic and carry the AP label.
Premises
- My studio complies with all modern building regulations and the floor, walls and ceilings are all highly insulated. This means I have no mobile phone reception inside my studio! Luckily I can use WiFi calling instead.
- My studio is heated by an oil filled electric radiator with 24-hour digital control. It heats the space very quickly and it stays warm throughout the day. During heatwaves the studio stays surprisingly cool.
- My studio is powered entirely by 100% renewable electricity from our green energy provider.
Fashion
- I support slow fashion and 80% of my wardrobe is preloved.
Buying from charity shops like Mountbatten means the money goes to a good cause and all the clothes are kept out of landfill so it is a win win. If you feel inspired check out The Monica Way. My favourite boutique in Hampshire is House of Gallet full of nearly new and new designer wear. It is a hidden gem.
